2056 THREE EXCEPTIONAL CHINA TRADE PAINTINGS

Group of three China Export scenes. Gouache on silk laid paper. Showing intricately decorated courtyard and interior scenes of pavilions, temples, with group of female and male personages and attendants, men in a courtyard setting smoking and enjoying a game, all shown at leisure activities, making offerings or visiting. The interior and exterior architectural and design motifs, the figures and their faces, the plants and trees are all rendered in great detail.

Provenance: Acquired in the early 1950s.

7038 ARCHITECTURAL CARVING OF VISHNU ON GARUDA

Red sandstone carving, probably of a door post, showing Vishnu on his vehicle the Garuda. The piece, originating from what is today Thailand, dates from the time the Khmer empire extended into Thailand with its capital at Lopburi. Approximately 13th century.

Provenance: Acquired 1968/1971 from a Thai collection.

7054 - CHINESE REVERSE GLASS PAINTING

This is an allegorical scene of protective deities shown together with a young woman with servants arriving at her home. Similar paintings were made for export and were often made in workshops in and around Canton/Guangzhou. The scene is different in that it is of an atypical Chinese subject matter as far as reverse glass paintings are concerned - an allegorical scene rather than of a beautiful woman or of a landscape. With old frame.

5064 - PAIR OF BURMESE TEMPLE CARVINGS

Pair of Burmese gilt and lacquered architectural wood carvings representing a "pyinsa rupa" - a combination of five animals -elephant, lion, buffalo, carp and hinthar. Mandalay style. The piece is studded with mica and colored glass pieces. Late 19th/early 20th century.

Mountain, lake and pine tree landscape with waterfall and hut nestled in pine grove, with extensive calligraphy describing the scenery. Signature of Jian Yi.

5103 - CHINESE COLOR PIGMENT ON PAPER SCROLL PAINTING

Showing a large parrot perched on flowering cherry tree, signed and sealed Lu Zong Gu. The scroll was exhibited at the Museum fur Angewandte Kunst, Vienna in the 1930's. This scroll looks much more vibrant than the photo conveys.

5025 - MANTEL GARNITURE OF PORCELAIN VASES WITH TWO FLOWER CONTAINERS

Finely decorated pair of trumpet shape vases together with flower containers in Imari style and colors, in coral red, blue and white, with mark on base, probably dating from the first half of the 20th century.

5133 - GILT AND LACQUERED BURMESE BUDDHA

Traditional Mandalay-style Buddha standing on a lotus throne, with porcelain eyes, with the right hand holding a lotus bud; embellished with mica and colored glass. Approximately mid-twentieth Century. Fine condition.

5123 - CHINESE HORIZONTAL COLOR ON PAPER SCROLL OF "FIVE DRAGON COLTS"

This scroll measures 24 feet long, 12" wide; the horse paintings measure approximately 80" long.

Provenance: Acquired in China prior to 1924.

Each horse is shown with a groom and a "story" about the horse written by Kao Yi, Chochow, Hopei. I have translations for four of the stories.

5119 - LARGE ROUND CHINESE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL DISH

The dish or basin is on a cylindrical foot ring. The center interior is decorated with four-clawed dragon chasing a flaming pearl, with a green phoenix swooping down amid clouds, all on a turquoise ground of cloud swirls and flames; encircled by a band of scrolling lotus, and a band of flower/blossom scrolls on broad everted rim. The exterior is with a central rosette of seven lotus surrounded by lotus and floral scroll borders.

Dated to 16th/17th century of the Ming period.

Condition: The piece has some loss to enamels as can be seen on the detail photos.

Provenance: Acquired by owner in the early 1960's.

4060 - Thai Bronze Buddha Statue

Thai gilt bronze Buddha, Ratanakosin period, 18th/19th century, the Buddha depicted in "Calming The Ocean" mudra. Both hands repaired at wrist, spire missing but very fine casting.

Provenance: The piece is said to have been owned by a member of the early Chakri dynasty - late 18th century.

5086 - Chinese Bronze Figure of Buddha

This image of Buddha, with reddish-brown patina, generally known as the " Buddha child taking his first steps" is depicted with his left hand pointing to the sky, and his right hand pointing to earth. The statue is with incised and raised lotus design, and is mounted on a waisted round lotus base. The piece is in fine condition and is an example of what is known as Sino-Tibetan art, dominant during the 17th/18th century but this statue appears to date from the 19th century. It was acquired from an estate consisting of Tibetan and Sino-Tibetan antiques.

4061 - Chinese Hardstone Dragon

Chinese hardstone carving of dragon, possibly jade, in archaistic style, of light celadon color with brown inclusions, decorated in raised and incised fashion. Probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. According to provenance information, the piece was brought back from China in 1972.

5115 - KOREAN PHOENIX ARCHITECTURAL WOOD CARVING

A very well executed gilt and lacquered carving of phoenix in side view, standing on rock base, on a cloud ground with pearl/sun above; all within an elongated medallion with inverted scalloped border. A striking piece and hard to find in today's market; showing very little wear and tear; appears to have been relacquered. Probably late 19th or early 20th century.

5031 - PAIR OF CHINESE JARDINIERES

An elegant pair of underglaze blue-white Chinese Jardinieres with matching saucer, decorated in asymmetrical fashion with large spray of peonies, and a small peony on the reverse; the saucer with matching design. Both the pot and the saucer are with crenulated top rim. The pieces date from the 19th or 20th century.

They were purchased by our gallery in 1970 as store decoration. Both pieces are in fine condition.

5044 - STONE VISHNU STATUE

Very striking grey sandstone Khmer style statue of Vishnu, with plaited hair gathered in high chignon fashion. Fine profile and detail. With four arms broken off at elbows. This is a rendition of a Khmer piece, and according to provenance information was made in Thailand, at the beginning of the 20th century.
