- Reverse Glass Painting from Indonesia
Indonesian
Reverse Glass Painting depicting scenes from the Mahabharata.
The painting appears to be an example of Balinese glass
painting, with Chinese, Arabic and wayang/shadow puppet
influences, and very likely dates from the very early
part of the 20th century. Balinese glass painting tradition
was established in Java in the 19th century and in Bali
in the early 1920s. There were several glass painting
centers in Balinese villages. The painting is signed.
