Although we do not have in-house professionals, we refer clients to excellent professionals we have done business with for many years. You can check out the website of the American Institute for Conservation, and The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas in Austin, as both have a list of professional restorers.

We recommend two professionals in Austin:

Cheryl Carrabba of Carrabba Conservation, Inc.

Cheryl works on preservation and conservation of art on paper and archives collections, matting & framing, minor repair or photographic material and consulting. 512. 452. 5880 Email: conservation@austin.rr.com

Catherine Williams of Silver Lining Art Conservation, LLC.

Catherine provides consultation, preservation and conservation of objects. 512. 695. 3260 Email: cat.wms@yahoo.com

We are always glad to discuss how to safely display or hang your Asian works of art.

Can You Tell Me What I Have, And What It Is Worth?

We always try to help, but as an appraiser Elisabeth is held to a higher standard and must be careful that what she says is not interpreted as an appraisal. As an appraiser, she has to follow certain standards and guidelines (USPAP). Although an appraisal can be rendered in oral fashion, the same standards would have to be followed. Based on photos, Elisabeth can give her opinion as a dealer in Asian art and advise how to best achieve your goal. Please do not send photos without first calling and please do sign your email.

Elisabeth W. Douglas, ASA, ISA CAPP

An appraisal is performed for a stated and specific purpose, i.e. insurance, estate, donation, equitable distribution, because the value may vary with the purpose. It consists of on-site examination, if possible, authentication or identification, research of comparable items and their values in the appropriate market, analysis of values and value conclusions — all contained and summarized in a formal document.

Personal property appraisers are not licensed, do not need to belong to an appraisal organization, and anyone may call himself an appraiser. The field of appraising, however, has undergone dramatic changes during the recent years — with insurance companies, law firms, courts, museums, and most importantly the IRS selecting from a field of qualified appraisers.

If you are looking for an appraiser, find out which appraisal organization the appraiser belongs to, if testing, accreditation and requalification are required, and if the appraiser follows the guidelines and standards of USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice).

Elisabeth Douglas provides appraisal services in the field of Asian art and antiques. Her professional designation is in the field of Personal Property/ Asian Art. She holds memberships in the American Society of Appraisers (since 1983) as Senior Appraiser (ASA), as well as the International Society of Appraisers (since 1995) as an Accredited Member (ISA). In 2007, after undertaking long-term and intensive studies in appraisal principles, and passing examinations on the theory and practice of professional appraising and ethical standards, Elisabeth attained the highest level of recognition ISA one can bestow: CAPP (Certified Appraiser of Personal Property). Both organizations require written examinations in appraisal ethics, principals of appraisal standards, and in the designated field of Asian Art. Both organizations require re-certification every five years.

Clients include individuals, insurance and moving companies, banks, estate managers, trustees, attorneys, investors and museums.

Please contact Elisabeth for information on her services and fees.
